Use memory strategies
- Mnemonic devices can be helpful
Pay attention to what you are trying to remember
- Try to focus as much as possible and ignore irrelevant factors
Avoid distractions/interruptions while working
- Go to a quiet place or turn off televisions and radios
- Avoid strenuous activities, relax
- Try not to get sidetracked
Use your circadian rhythms
- See our “Using circadian rhythms to one’s advantage” page for more detail!
Repetition
- Repeat things out loud. For example, when you meet someone new, use their name often initially. Hearing yourself say it out loud can help you link it in your memory
Elaboration
- Apply meaning to what you want to remember
- Perhaps conjure an image or link meaningless information to an image (a form of mnemonic device!)
Practice a routine
- Do the same things at the same time each day
- Set alarms to help you remember to do things
Use external memory aids such as written reminders & memos
- A pinboard or magnetic whiteboard could be your new best friend! Or perhaps dedicate a section of your fridge door to this task.
- Large desk-sized calendars are easy to read and allow you to keep track of all deadlines and events – get into the habit of promptly writing new notes on the calendar, and looking at it every morning.
- Consider color-coding, red for bills, yellow for family or social events, etc
Exercise your brain!
- Try doing brain teasers, puzzles, crosswords, sudoku, simon says, or memory card games!
